City Center
History

The City Center was built around the busy intersection of Jaffa Road and King George St. This was the first intersection in Jerusalem to contain a traffic light! Jaffa Road is one of the longest and oldest streets in Jerusalem. It crosses the city from east to west, starting at the walls of the Old City and continuing down town.
Originally paved in 1861 as part of the highway to Jaffa, Jaffa Road quickly became the central point for the 19th century expansion out of Jerusalem’s Old City walls and early neighborhoods in the close vicinity.
During the period of the British Mandate, this area was further developed with the establishment of many central institutions including Jerusalem’s city hall and the city’s central post office.
